ABC's of Psychology


Affect – feeling.
-The letters affected her sentimentally.


Behavior – doing.
-When Tyson began chewing on his bed and tearing out the stuffing, his behavior became aggressive.


Cognition – thinking.
-Human higher cognition is what sets us apart from other mammals.


Development – process of progress.
-We are constantly developing mentally and physically.


Effect - result.
-The boy felt the effect of getting a shot.


Feeling – conscious sensation.
-She felt sad when her dog passed away.


Gestalt laws of organization – principle describing how we organize information into meaning.
-Gestalt laws of organization gives psychologists insight to how human process information.


Humanistic – control over behavior.
-Humanistic quality is unique to the human species.

Influence – compelling force.
-It is easy to become influenced through peer pressure.

Just – fair.
-Rocky’s view of a just world would be a world of peace without any act of violence.


Knowledge – reasoning.
-Marry Sue had enough knowledge about test taking to not wait until last minute to study.

Learning – acquiring knowledge.
-We learn a lot through our experiences.


Metacognition – ‘knowing about knowing’ or ‘thinking about thinking’.
               -Metacognition is unique higher level of thinking in humans.


Neuroscience – biological functioning.
-Neuroscience views the perspective of inheritance, nervous system, and the brain.


Observation – an act to perceive.
-The psychologist was able to narrow his diagnosis after a few hours of observing his patient.


Perspective – one’s ideas.
-As individuals, we are all unique to our own perspective, for we all have our own perception of the world in which we live in.


Query – question in mind.
               -Curiosity sparks her query about the meaning of life.


Research – investigate through experimentation and/or observation.
-The world of scientific research is constantly expanding.


Social – interaction.
-Social networking media has created a new way of communicating.


Theories – general explanation.
-Through tested theories scientists are able to take a step closer to uncovering more explanations to certain phenomena's.


Understanding – comprehend.
-Being able to understand the world around you.


Visual depth perception – perceiving spatial relationships.
            -Little Susie began understanding 3D imagery when she developed visual depth perception.

Will – power to choose and act.
-Gary had the will to not punch his offender in the face.

Xenophobia – fear of strangers or strange places.
-Mubert’s xenophobia has a major impact on his social skills.

You – an individual.
-You must be ability to understand yourself before understanding others.


Zero Correlation – relationship between variables.
-Psychologist use zero correlation to understand statistical values.
